Abstract

The in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x single crystals, doped to the maximum Tc ~ 90 K, was investigated in magnetic fields up to13 T, oriented both parallel and perpendicular to the current. Above the critical temperature we found that the in-plane magnetoresistance is positive, the out-of-plane magnetoresistance negative, and that their temperature variations depend on the orientation of the magnetic field. The in-plane magnetoresistance violates Kohler's rule but follows the square of the Hall angle at temperatures substantially abovc Tc. The anomalous, anisotropic magnetoresistance can be described well by superconducting order parameter fluctuations with extensions of the theory for the interaction of carrier spins with the magnetic field.
